Mention a Disney fairy, and the ordinary people will imagine a bird-sized human with butterfly wings and a liking for mischief. Nonetheless, that’s a very modern take on the old concept of fairies. Fairies are mostly seen in Celtic mythology and are much darker in nature compared to the modern interpretation in Disney movies.

Did you know that most of these fairies could be traced back to the People of the Mounds? They are said to be the war survivors between the native Celtic folks and invading Iberians referred to as the Mil Espáine.

For many centuries, fairies have played a wonderful and mystical role in folklore that filled the minds of kids and those kids at heart with a captivating world of beauty and magic. These days, pixies of all types still fuel kid’s imaginations through movies and stories.

This post will dig deeper into the top ten important facts you need to know about Disney fairies. Are you ready? Without further ado, let’s dive in!

Tinkerbell Fairies

One of the most highly popular Disney fairies of all time is none other than Tinkerbell. No movie fairy piece would be complete without this one. Peter Pan has been adapted many times for the big screen, and no other depiction of Tinker Bell has reached the milestones that Disney’s version has.

The British playwright Sir James M. Barrie created Peter and Wendy for his 1904 play and 1911 Novel. Tinkerbell was described as a “common fairy” who would mend kettles and pots. Thus, the name Tinker Bell comes from the idea that she’s an actual tinker.

In early plays, she’s portrayed by a beam of light, and her voice was the sound of tinkling bells instead of actually speaking. But did you know that the first real image of Tinkerbell came from the 1953 animated Peter Pan movie from Disney? That’s especially true even though she didn’t have any dialogue in that movie.

In later movie adaptations of the story of Peter Pan, Tinker Bell has been known to speak. With her own movies, she was able to take center stage.

Tinkerbell Fairy

Tinker Bell may be small and not utter a single word, but she has one of the massive personalities in the whole movie. Regardless of her rather malicious actions towards Wendy out of jealousy, it’s quite tough not to like her.

Tinker is effortlessly one of the most iconic characters of Disney, and it is no surprise she has gone to star in her series and has her franchise.

Fairies in Peter Pan

As mentioned earlier, Peter Pan was created by J.M. Barrie, but it’s best known for its Disney adaptation. The story concentrates on a young boy who does not grow up and is introduced to the world and to one of the most popular pixies of all—Tinkerbell.

Since the 1953 movie, Tinker Bell has become a massive Disney icon and is featured on merchandise and her own movie that was released in 2008. The movie gave a back story to the fairy and was followed by another movie, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, in 2009.

Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty Fairies

Let’s also not forget about the fairy godmothers. Like Peter Pan, the stories of Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella are highly sought by animated Disney fairies films. Cinderella was released way back in 1950 and then followed by Sleeping Beauty in 1959.

Neither story concentrates on fairies, but their magic plays a crucial role in the lives of the princesses. For instance, in Cinderella, her fairy godmother changes her destroyed dress into a lovely gown and gives her a carriage to bring her to the ball.

On the other hand, Aurora in Sleeping Beauty is blessed by three good fairies and cursed by an evil fairy. The three good fairies of this Disney film would be the stars of the show if it weren’t for Maleficent. Merryweather, Fauna, and Flora aren’t the only main source of comedy in this film but one of the key driving forces as well.

Together, the three good fairies were able to save the princess through the help of her true love.

Disney Fairies

Disney Fairies is a franchise film in Disney that was released in 2005. The license started with the release of the manuscript Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg. The franchise focuses on Tinker Bell, the communicative pixie from the movie Peter Pan and its continuation film, Return to Never Land.

Together with Tinker Bell, Disney Fairies features a score of original characters made particularly for the line. The series has a rather different cast of characters compared to the book series.

Below are the Disney Fairies characters from the movie you need to know:

  • Zarina This Disney Fairies character is an ambitious dust-keeper who steals the blue pixie dust of Pixie Hollow and partners with a team of pirates. She, later on, became their new caption. Zarina is a clever, helpful, and feisty fairy and can often be curious about her dust powers.
  • Periwinkle She is a frost-skilled Winter fairy and the fraternal twin sister of Tinker Bell. She and Tinker Bell were born from the identical fairy. However, Periwinkle glided into the Winter Woods. On the other hand, Tink ended up being born at the Pixie Dust Tree.
  • Vidia This fair has a fast-flying skill. Vidia has a fair skin, black hair, pouty lips, gray eyes, arched eyebrows and is a quite tall fairy. She takes pride in being the fastest fairy of all and scoffs the idea that anybody else—particularly a fair like Tinker Bell—is anywhere close to her level.
  • Fawn She is a fairy, along with an animal talent. Fawn is a tomboy filled with mischief and mirth. She is always ready to play, and the rougher the game is, the better. Tinker Bell always likes her naughty nature. One characteristic you need to know about Fawn is that she does not like to judge things by their appearances.
  • Iridessa One of the most talented and skilled light fairies, Iridessa is a detail-oriented fairy. She is often seen so dedicated about her work but can be worrywart at the same time, even when she tries to see the bright side, but sometimes smells chaos.
  • Rosetta A garden fairy, Rosetta loves to take care of the flowers and plants. She’s extremely fancy and loves to try on beautiful shoes and dresses. Even though Never fairies do not age, she is the first to arrive out of Tinker Bell’s friends.
  • Silvermist A water fairy, Silvermist has brown eyes and a long black hair. She often fairs green and blue lily and can be extremely easy-going and calm. She’s the type of Disney fairy that loves to help out her friends but can be a bit silly sometimes. She is more likely to listen to her heart more than her head. Tink and the rest of her fairy friends call her Sil.
